Meeting Miss George!

Today we had a special visit from Miss George. Miss George will be teaching T12 from the start of term 2. It has been great getting to know her and building whanaungatanga!

Buzzing with Bee Bots!

Bee-Bots are the perfect tool for introducing students to the principles of coding. Whio has been using Bee-Bots, the Bee-Bots app and an unplugged activity called Kid Bot during our Maths/Digi-tech lessons this week. Bee-Bots are exciting programmable robots that tamariki can program to move around a grid. In our sessions this week, we have used the Bee-Bots as a tool to enhance our directional skills. Although using Bee-bots looks simple, there is a lot of learning taking place. Students design, write and debug their code in order to reach a goal. We have had lots of fun and especially enjoyed the unplugged group challenge where we have to find the shortest path to get to the dinosaur!

Zones of Regulation

This week we introduced the 'Zones of Regulation' to the tamariki. We discussed the different zones and what they mean. We identified which emotions belonged in the different zones. The Zones of Regulation will help tamariki develop self-regulation skills. They will be able to identify what "zone" they are in and use strategies to stay in or move to a different zone. You can support at home by: Using the Zones language with your child. For example, “This is really frustrating me and making me go into the Yellow Zone. I need to use a tool to calm down. I will take some deep breaths Help your child gain awareness of their zones and feelings by pointing out your observations. Help your child become comfortable using the language to communicate their feelings and needs. Validate what zone your child is in and help them brainstorm ways to self-regulate. Football with Christchurch United Football Club

For the next three weeks, we are lucky to have Coach Paul and Coach Tom from Christchurch United taking us for football skills. We had two rules: we weren't allowed to touch the ball with our hands, and we weren't allowed to do big kicks. We learnt how to dribble and stop, penguin walk (keeping the ball between our feet) and side slide. After just 30 minutes the tamariki had all picked up lots of great skills. We can't wait for next week!
